Beast from the Abyss

The “ Abyss ” was introduced when the “ fifth trumpet ” sounded and demonic hordes “ ascended ” from it. It is referred to next after the “ Two Witnesses ” complete their “ testimony .” On cue, the “ Beast ascends from the Abyss ” to attack and slay them, but only after they finish their prophetic mission.

The Ascent

Repeatedly, Satan and his forces ascend from the deep pit to attack the men and women who belong to the Lamb .  T he “ Abyss ” first appears when the “ fifth trumpet ” is sounded, releasing a horde of hideous beings that ascend from the pit and swarm over the earth tormenting men. This force is ruled by the “ a ngel of the Abyss named Abaddon and Apollyon .” Both names mean “destruction.” Thus, the “ Abyss ” is the source of satanic forces that deceive men and a ttack the church.

The Abyss

When it is first introduced, “ smoke ” and locust-like creatures are seen ascending from the “ Abyss ” to torment the “ inhabitants of the earth .” It is the deep pit from which satanic forces are seen ascending to wreak havoc on the Earth, and especially to wage war against the “ saints .” It is also the “prison” where demonic forces are imprisoned until their appointed time when they will attempt to execute their malevolent plans to destroy God’s people.

Satan Imprisoned

The Book of Revelation describes how Satan is bound in the “ Abyss ” for the “ thousand years ” until his release at the end of the period. During his imprisonment, he is prevented from “ deceiving the nations .” Only after he is released is he free to mislead the nations of the earth and to wage war without restraint on the church – in modern parlance, Full-Spectrum Dominance .

Beast from the Abyss

The Beast first appears as ascends from the Abyss to wage war on the Two Witnesses after they complete their testimony  – Revelation 11:7.  The “ Abyss ” was introduced when the “ fifth trumpet ” sounded and demonic hordes “ ascended ” from that dark place. It is referred to next after the “ two witnesses ” complete their “ testimony .” On cue, the “ beast ascends from the Abyss ” to attack and slay both “ witnesses ,” but it cannot do so until they have finished their prophetic mission.

Two Witnesses Testify

In its task of prophesying before “ nations and kings ,” the church is symbolized by “Two Witnesses” that “ testify ” before the “ Inhabitants of the Earth .” Their work continues for the entire “ twelve hundred and sixty days ” or “ forty-two months ” until they “ finish ” their prophetic ministry. Afterward, they are “ slain by the Beast from the Abyss .”

Fifth Trumpet - First Woe

The fifth trumpet unleashes the first of “three woes,” and malevolent creatures began to ascend from the Abyss  – Revelation 8:13-9:12.  When the fifth angel blows his trumpet, John sees smoke “ ascending ” from the “ Abyss ,” a place ruled by an “ angel ” associated with “ destruction ,” and the “ Abyss ” becomes prominent in several of subsequent visions. It is the source of entities hostile to the “ Lamb ” and his people, creatures that “ ascend ” to wreak havoc, sometimes on the “ inhabitants of the earth ,” but more often on the “ saints. ”
